| pt_PT |
dc.description.abstract | Porous materials are abundant in nature and accordingly they have different functions in different contexts. Two of the most important natural functions are filtering of particles from otherwise liquid media and second, achieving a lightweight but adequately strong body. Man-made filters should have the two abovementioned properties. In this thesis the results of a technique of making porous discs from glass microspheres are presented. The discs were obtained by sintering the green bodies of monodisperse glass microspheres made by wetting the spheres with an adequate organic binder. The discs were prepared with spheres of three different diameters and under varying sintering conditions - temperature and time. Porosity, mechanical strength and fluid permeability were measured as a function of the particle size and the variables of the sintering process. A accessory tool for the tensile/compression testing machine was constructed for measuring the fracture strength of the discs having rough surface with spherical bumps. The results are explained within the existing models of the behaviour of two phase’s materials. Finally, some of the advantages of the abundantly and cheaply available glass microspheres in making the compacts are pointed out. | pt_PT |
