Ziegler-Natta (filme I) ou do tipo metaloceno (filme II).
DMA ainda pior, nomeadamente para filmes do tipo I. Dado o comportamento
a elaboração das fichas técnicas do produto The mechanical requirements of plastic food packaging are critical to ensure storage capacity. To guarantee the good performance of its products and the satisfaction of its customers, Danipack has to prepare technical data sheets for its products. This dissertation consisted in characterizing the mechanical behavior of two films containing low density polyethylene (PEBD) and linear low density polyethylene (PELBD), prepared using Ziegler-Natta (film I) or metallocene (film II) type catalysts. The performance of the films was assessed using procedures implemented in the company namely friction coefficient measurements, tensile tests and Hot Tack tests, and the results obtained were statistically treated. In order to understand the effect of the type of polymer on the mechanical performance of the films, representative samples were selected and further analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The determination of the coefficient of dynamic friction was inconclusive since the preparation of the samples considered had been adjusted to ensure that this value was within a specific range. From the results of tensile tests it was concluded that there is a reduced variation in the mean value of the stress at break as a function of the blow ratio in the longitudinal direction, while in the transverse direction there is a growing tendency in both films I and films II. As regards the Hot-Tack tests, using the same thickness and composition, it was found that film II exhibits a lower sealing peak temperature and a hot seal strength higher than the film I. The analyses of a set of samples by SEM, on the untreated side, suggested that the surface of zPELBD samples was more heterogeneous. The same samples were studied by DMA, where the differences between the replicates suggested the heterogeneity of the samples. This was verified by comparison with results obtained for samples prepared using similar blow ratios but which presented higher levels of error in the tensile tests. Indeed, in the latter case the lack of reproducibility of DMA results was even worse namely for type I films. In view of the disparity of results observed in the melting region registered by DMA, DSC was used to evaluate the percentage of crystallinity and the melting range of one sample of film I and another of film II which confirmed that the crystalline structures of these samples are rather heterogeneous. With this work the mechanical properties of flexible films of both types, zLLDPE/LDPE (film I) and mLLDPE/LDPE (film II) have been fully characterized, contributing to the elaboration of the technical datasheets of the product |
