Representação visual do som: o design de comunicação na interpretação de conceitos musicais

Abstract

O som sempre fez parte do dia a dia da sociedade, seja através de um mero assobio ou o cantar durante o cultivo de campos no século XVIII, como também nos recentes aparelhos eletrónicos que se traz no bolso, no ruído do meio urbano e mesmo no silêncio. Tudo pode fazer parte do modo como ouvimos e como atribuímos ao som um valor físico e visual. Voluntária ou involuntariamente, associar-se-á uma imagem a um som. A familiaridade dos sons permite criar imagens – desde a imagem do próprio meio de reprodução a conceptualizações visuais, imaginadas – dando assim origem a diferentes interpretações e representações visuais no meio físico – desde projeções, cartazes, vídeos, fotografias ou notações – que, de certa forma, transmitem uma ideia e criam ligações ao pensamento que o gerou. É nesta relação que se situa a presente dissertação: na ligação, perceção e interpretação da imagem com o som. As imagens são intrínsecas ao design, a minha área de formação. Num tema tão vasto, o foco inicial é perceber em que áreas a relação audiovisual poderá ser abordada pelo olhar do designer enquanto elemento de ligação entre os dois universos distintos. A abordagem metodológica é heurística e experimental, explorando através de vários exercícios as dimensões técnicas, tecnológicas e estéticas da comunicação visual do som, sendo cada um dessas experiências, mais do que soluções finais, retirar ingredientes para futuras incursões nesta área.

Sound has always been a part of society's daily life, whether through a simple whistle or singing during the cultivation of fields in the 18th century, as well as in the recent electronic gadgets that are carried in the pocket, in the noise of the urban environment and even in the silence. Everything can be part of the way we listen and how we give to sound a physical and visual value. Voluntary or involuntary, an image will be associated with a sound. The familiarity of sounds allows the creation of images -from the image of the reproduction medium itself to imagined visual conceptualizations -thus giving rise to different interpretations and visual representations in the physical environment -from projections, posters, videos, photographs or notations -which, somehow convey an idea and create links to the thought that spawned it. It is in this relation that the present dissertation is located: in the connection, perception and interpretation of the image with sound. The images are related to the design, my area of education. In such a vast subject, the initial focus is to understand in what areas the audio-visual relation can be approached by the designer's view as an element of connection between the two different universes. The methodological approach is heuristic and experimental, exploring through various exercises the technical, technological and aesthetic dimensions of the visual communication of sound, each of these experiences being more than final solutions, removing ingredients for future incursions in this area.
