Da ilustração tridimensional ao plano da página no álbum para a infância em Portugal

Abstract

O estudo que aqui se apresenta trata o álbum ilustrado para a infância em Portugal, detendo-se num fenómeno emergente – a ilustração tridimensional. Perspetiva-se a hipótese de que esta forma de expressão seja uma proposta imagética alternativa, abrindo novas possibilidades à ilustração contemporânea. Procurou-se, para tal, compreender os fatores que estiveram na origem deste fenómeno e o processo criativo subjacente, orientando a investigação no sentido da análise dos discursos visuais da ilustração tridimensional, pelos seus protagonistas e respetivas práticas, aspirando à caracterização desta expressão sob os pontos de vista técnico e estético. Partimos de um estudo teórico, sendo depois desenvolvida uma pesquisa empírica, sustentada pela seleção e entrevista a ilustradores portugueses de referência, que recorrem à tridimensionalidade para representar. Concluímos que o uso das tecnologias digitais, como meio privilegiado para a criação de imagens na viragem do século XX para o século XXI, se terá traduzido numa excessiva artificialidade, presente na ilustração. Em reação a este estilo, o ilustrador procurou diferenciar-se, redescobrindo-se numa expressão mais autêntica e espontânea. É neste contexto, que emerge uma outra relação com a obra, em que é valorizada uma relação de maior intimidade com os diferentes materiais, permitindo uma perceção ampliada pelo tato – contrariando uma existência que se confina, cada vez mais, à bidimensionalidade do ecrã.

The present study focus on the realm of the picturebook for childrenʼs in Portugal, centred on an emerging phenomenon — the three-dimensional illustration. It formulated the hypothesis of this form of expression as an alternative proposal imagery that opens new possibilities to the contemporary illustration. Within this scope, the study attempted to understand the factors that originated the three-dimensional illustration and to examine its creative process. The research, carried out by an analysis of the visual discourses of its professionals and their practices, aimed to characterised this three — dimensional expression, technical and aesthetically. The investigation was initiated through a theoretical study followed by an empirical research. It was supported by a selection and an interview of relevant Portuguese illustrators which explore the three-dimensional illustration in their work. We concluded that the use of digital technologies as a privileged means for creating images at the turn of the twentieth century to the twenty-first century generated an excessive artificiality in the illustration. In response, the illustrator looked to differentiate himself from his peers and in this searching, he discovers a more genuine and spontaneous visual expression. Is in this context that emerged a new kind of relationship between the illustrator and his work, where is valued a deeper experience in the use of the various art materials. This practice allowed to the illustrator an expanded perception of his work through touch, in opposition to the two-dimensional experience of the screen.
