constitui a escola.
socialmente reconhecida. Dessa cultura sobressaem a
pessoal e individual, quer sobretudo colectiva, subjacente à
as dimensões curriculares instituída e instituinte. Ou seja, sobre o
papel e novas funções do Professor do 1.º Ciclo do Ensino Básico. This study falls within the ambit of thought on questions of curriculum development, management and supervision to the extent that these are passive instruments which can be used to facilitate the construction of a collective identity in the school and thus promote the emergence of a singular curricular culture. The assumptions of this possibility include, on one hand, that professionals (teachers and other participants in education) reflect and analyse, and that they possess a certain level of awareness of the ways to make use of the limits of autonomy that current curricular flexibility permits. On the other hand, the emergence of a culture is also linked to the conceptions of education professionals about the role of the school and of other less institutionalised education intermediaries, and to the possibilities that exist of motivating a collective effort towards the objective of improving the quality of educational practices. Thus the construction of a collective identity depends also on the recognition that the ecology of each school constitutes a powerful explanatory and facilitating factor of an integrated comprehension of the problems of the students and a truly rich source of resources, if the potentialities of ecological transitions are taken into account. Finally, a culture emanating from practices (insofar as the curricular dimension institutes culture), is also dependent upon the mobilising power of leadership, of how it is accepted by the collective, and upon the coherence between the various types and levels of participation. Therefore, in this study, an attempt was made to learn extensively, for a particular institution where the curricular culture has already received some public recognition, what are the underlying dynamics and conceptions that can be said to be at the root of the emergence of this differentiated culture. From a methodological standpoint, the study was developed according to a qualitative and interpretative methodology that crossed information gathered at various ecological levels (intra and extra-school) and gathered from individuals who can be said to represent the school collective. The techniques used varied according to the nature of the respective information to be gathered, and the information gathering instruments (questionnaires and interviews) and information handling tools were validated according to their specificity. The system of categories used to carry out the content analysis of the information gathered was elaborated by crossing the subjacent perspectives with the theoretical background of the study. From here emerged the relevant indicators for understanding the object of study. The most general conclusions point towards a confirmation that given the assumptions outlined earlier, individual cultures of curricular development and management emerge, which contribute to the definition of a socially recognised identity. The following aspects of this culture are of particular importance: a) the conceptions of teachers in their capacities as professionals responsible for the nature and quality of curricular practices; b) the role of leadership in management, co-ordination and motivation of teams; c) the quality of reflection at the personal and individual level and above all at the collective level. This latter is subjacent to the elaboration of the school's education philosophy and to the plans for differentiated curricular intervention - a condition taken as indispensable to the process(es) of development at all levels; d) the affective-relational climate and the enormous implication there is in the challenge to respond to the necessities and interests of the students who are the prime targets of the entire process described and considered here. This study, while identifying some of the conceptual areas to which the participants themselves refer, leaves them open to future developments either at the level of the school itself or in research into the relation between the instituted and instituting curricular dimensions i.e. research into the role of the new functions of the 1st Cycle Teacher of Basic Education. |
