O Renascimento de Eva: a Desconstrução do Mito de Eva na Ficção de Angela Carter

Abstract

Na presente dissertação propomo-nos analisar o milenar mito bíblico de Eva, integrado no Livro de Génesis, dando um especial destaque ao modo como a narrativa bíblica da criação, existência paradisíaca primordial e subsequente expulsão do Paraíso dos progenitores da espécie humana tem moldado o modus vivendi das sociedades cristãs ocidentais ao longo dos tempos. Focaremos particularmente as mais marcantes e influentes interpretações da referida narrativa mítica, que têm sido desenvolvidas desde os tempos remotos dos primórdios da Cristandade, e que realçam veementemente o estatuto inferior e submisso de Eva em particular, e de todas as mulheres no geral, quer no domínio privado quer no domínio público. Essas interpretações criaram uma imagem estereotipada da primeira mulher da mitologia cristã, imagem essa que se enraizou de tal maneira na psique dos povos cristãos, que todas as mulheres passaram a ser associadas com sentimentos negativos , tais como a fraqueza, a falibilidade, a maldade e a propensão para sucumbir a tentações malévolas e pecaminosas. Contudo, com o surgimento e desenvolvimento dos estudos bíblicos feministas, Eva tornou-se um dos principais focos do interesse e análise de críticas e romancistas feministas, que têm proposto teorias inovadoras, provocadoras e revolucionárias, questionando e destruindo a natureza indisputável dos antigos e misóginos estigmas da tentação, pecado e castigo que se encontram associados a Eva e às suas “filhas”. Neste estudo daremos um ênfase especial à reformulação do mito de Eva que foi desenvolvida por uma das mais proeminentes romancistas britânicas da literatura contemporânea, Angela Carter. Analisaremos as suas inovadoras e polémicas interpretações da referida narrativa bíblica nos romances The Magic Toyshop, Heroes and Villains, The Passion of New Eve e num conto integrado na colecção Fireworks e intitulado “Penetrating to the Heart of the Forest”. Apesar destas obras terem sido escritas há mais de duas décadas, elas continuam a assumir uma importância considerável no campo das revisões feministas da Bíblia.

In the present dissertation we purport to analyse the millennial biblical myth of Eve, integrated in the Book of Genesis, laying a special emphasis upon the way the biblical report of the creation, primordial paradisiacal existence and subsequent expulsion from Paradise of the progenitors of the human species has been moulding the modus vivendi of western Christian societies throughout the times. We shall focus particularly on the most remarkable and influential interpretations of that mythical narrative, which have been developed since the remote primordial times of Christianity, and that vehemently emphasise the inferior and submissive status of Eve in particular, and of all women in general, both in the private and public spheres. Those particular readings devised a stereotypical image of the primal woman in Christian mythology, a portrait that became so deeply entrenched in the psyche of Christian people that the entire womankind was from then on helplessly associated with negative feelings, such as weakness, fallibility, wickedness and propensity to fall prey to malevolent and sinful temptations. However, with the advent and development of feminist biblical scholarship, Eve became one of the central foci of interest and analysis of feminist scholars and novelists, who have been proposing innovative, provocative and revolutionary theories about the myth, questioning and destroying the indisputability of the age-old misogynist stigmas of temptation, sin and punishment associated with Eve and her “daughters”. In this study we shall place a special emphasis on the interpretation and rewriting of the myth of Eve developed by one of the most prominent contemporary British novelists, Angela Carter. We shall analyse her innovative and polemical interpretations of the biblical narrative in the novels The Magic Toyshop, Heroes and Villains, The Passion of New Eve and in the short -story “Penetrating to the Heart of the Forest” included in her collection Fireworks. Although these works were written more than two decades ago, they are still very relevant as far as feminist revisions of the Bible are concerned.
