Abstract: | No presente trabalho, procurámos conhecer melhor a realidade referente à
de Língua Portuguesa no ensino da oralidade e da argumentação;
- descrever e analisar a competência argumentativa dos alunos;
The present work has tried to assess the opportunities that Portuguese pupils encounter to learn argumentative oral skills in the context of Portuguese Language classes during the years of compulsory education. Accordingly, research was directed at pupils at school-leaving age, that is, fourteen- to fifteen-year-olds attending 9th grade. Our working hypothesis was that these pupils are not sufficiently exposed to extensive, systematic teaching of argumentative oral skills in Portuguese Language classes. Rather, we claim, speaking skills, namely those concerning the exposition of ideas, have been conspicuously absent — an absence that míght account for the pupils’ shortcomings in this area. The initial phase of our research project involved work with two groups of pupils, whose oral output (recorded over a number of sessions) provided us with a linguistic corpus. Adopting a descriptive approach, we then set out to: - survey the attitude of these pupils as far as the role of the Portuguese Language class as a promoter of oral argumentation is concerned; - describe and analyse the pupils’ argumentative skills; - establish their level of metalinguistic awareness in relation to their own productions. We conclude with a discussion of the results obtained, hoping that they might contribute to a wider recognition, first, of the value of speaking, second, of the immense benefits associated with the integration of oral argumentative skills in the First Language curriculum at this stage of schooling. |
