Abstract: The wettingbehaviorofcopperontungstencarbidesurfaceswasinvestigatedthroughthesessiledropmethod,at1080 1C, invacuum atmosphere. Testswereperformedonthreedifferenttypesofsubstrates:(i)commercialsampleofWCCowith3.5wt%ofcobalt;(ii)WCthin film sputterdepositedontheaforementionedcommercialWCCosampleand(iii)WCsampleprocessedbyhotpressing.Thelowest final contact anglewasachievedontheWCCosurface(61), followedbythoseofWCthin film (131) andWC(251). Thecontactanglevalueswere inversely correlatedwiththewettingbehavior,i.e.thehighestwettabilitywasfoundfortheWCCoandthelowestfortheWCsurfaces. Structural, microstructuralandelementalcharacterizationsoftheinterfaceregionbetweenthemoltencopperandthesubstratewereperformed, using lowangleXraydiffractionandscanningelectronmicroscopycoupledwithenergydispersivespectroscopy(SEM/EDS).Thewettability behavior wasdiscussedtakingintoconsiderationtheeffectofminorphases, suchascobalt.
