O manual enciclopédico de Aquiles Monteverde

Abstract

Aquiles Monteverde, um diplomata, escritor e pedagogo do século XIX que dedicou grande parte da sua vida e dos seus cuidados literários à instrução e educação da mocidade, e especialmente aos jovens que frequentavam as escolas primárias. Do rol de obras de sua autoria, sobressai aquela que, dado o enorme surto editorial que teve, viria a ser uma das mais divulgadas e procuradas no referido século, intitulando-se Manual Enciclopédico para uso das escolas de instrução primária. Inicialmente foi concebido com o objectivo de servir à aprendizagem dos alunos da instrução primária, funcionando como a segunda parte de um projecto pedagógico pensado pelo seu autor, cuja primeira parte seria ocupada pelo Método facílimo para aprender a ler tanto a letra redonda como a manuscrita no mais curto espaço de tempo possível. Alargou depois o âmbito do seu conteúdo, oferecendo uma informação enciclopédica aos alunos do ensino secundário e superior, e a todos aqueles que por si só desejassem instruir-se, completar ou aprofundar a sua instrução e aos próprios mestres. Incluiu no seu plano o estudo de várias matérias fundamentais ao enriquecimento cultural do indivíduo, desde os princípios gerais da moral; a instrução moral e religiosa; as noções da gramática portuguesa; os princípios de aritmética; os elementos de civilidade; as definições geométricas e suas aplicações; a geografia, especialmente de Portugal e suas colónias e do Império do Brasil; a cronologia, as noções de história e um resumo da de Portugal; a literatura portuguesa; as noções gerais de física e uma sucinta notícia da mitologia. Dada a correcção, objectividade e utilidade de tais assuntos, expostos segundo estratégias pedagógico-didácticas visando uma maior facilidade e rapidez na sua aquisição e compreensão, esta pequena enciclopédia conheceu sucessivas edições desde 1836, data da sua primeira aparição, até 1952, ano da publicação daquela que se supõe ter sido a última reedição, perfazendo um total de quinze edições de muitos milhares de exemplares, sempre revistas, aumentadas e melhoradas, mesmo num período já póstumo ao seu autor. De facto, este Manual Enciclopédico marcou indiscutivelmente não só a juventude de duas ou três gerações que nos seus mais verdes anos com ele privou e dele retirou o essencial à sua instrução, mas também toda uma época em que se vivia uma procura intensa de conhecimento, num Portugal politicamente conturbado, com uma elevadíssima taxa de analfabetismo e um enorme atraso no campo da educação, onde os manuais para esse fim eram bastante escassos e pouco esclarecedores.

Aquiles Monteverde, a diplomat, writer and pedagogue of the 19th century who dedicated a great part of his life and of his literary writings to the instruction and education of the youth, and especially of the youngsters who attended elementary schools. From the large number of his works, and given the enormous editorial success it had, the written work which stands out would be one of the most published and sought works in that century, being entitled Manual Encyclopedic to be used on elementary instruction schools. It was first conceived with the purpose of serving the learning process of elementary students, working as the second part of a pedagogic project thought by its author, whose first part would be filled with the Easier Method to learn how to read not only the round letter but also the handwritten one in the shortest possible time. Later one, he amplified the contents in its extent, offering encyclopedic information to intermediate and advanced schools, and to all those who wished to learn by themselves, complete or deepen their instruction, and also to the teachers. In his plan, he included the study of several basic subjects, fundamental to the cultural enrichment of the individual, from the moral general principles; the moral and religious instruction; the notions of Portuguese grammar; the arithmetical principles; the elements of civility; the geometric definitions and its applications; the geography, especially of Portugal, its colonies and the Brazilian Empire; the chronology, the history notions and a summary of the Portuguese history; the Portuguese literature; the general notions of physics and to brief mythological news. Given the correction, objectivity and utility of such matters, exposed according to didactic-pedagogical strategies which aimed at a bigger facility and quickness in its acquisition and comprehension, this small encyclopedia has known successive editions since 1836, the date of its first appearance, until 1952, the year of publication of the one which is supposedly thought to be the last re-edition, making a total of fifteen editions of many millions of copies, always revised, amplified and improved, even in a posthumous period of its author. In fact, this Manual Encyclopedic has unquestionably determined not only the youth of two or three generations who on its salad days has deprived with it and has withdrawn the essential to their learning, but also a whole era where people were experiencing an intense search for knowledge, in a politically disturbed Portugal, with a high average of analphabetism and an enormous delay in the education field, where the manuals for that end were pretty scarce and poorly enlightening.
