Neste sentido, as
It is common knowledge that the building industry sector, particularly the one concerning new buildings, has been suffering one of the major recessions of the last decades, which is expected to continue in the years to come. Bearing this fact in mind, it is urgent that we change our focus into the rehabilitation and preservation of the patrimony already built. This built heritage is becoming more and more important. Old buildings possess very distinct characteristics from the ones currently built. Therefore, in the property-conservation and rehabilitation operations applied to such buildings, the choice of the substitution mortar is vital to obtain a solution compatible to the preexistent materials (that does not cause the degradation of the supports) and contributes to the durability of the work. Following this idea, lime based mortars, mainly those based on aerated lime, have revealed to be a compatible and viable solution for the conservation or replacement of old buildings’ joints. For this reason, it is fundamental to study its characteristics, to apply the solution that best adjusts to each case study. The incorporation of ceramic residues in lime mortars won a new dimension, allowing not only the lowering of the environmental impact due to its deposit in landfills, as well as the reduction of the consumption of natural resources. Bearing these facts in mind, in the present thesis five mortar formulations were developed (some of them with the incorporation of tile dust), based in aerated lime and hydraulic lime, with the volumetric trace of 1:2, for the re-sealing of the joints of old buildings. The formulated limes were characterized in mechanical and physical terms and also in other relevant parameters, such as their reaction to water, thus allowing an overall evaluation of the mortars and the comparison of the differences among them. The results achieved through the laboratory tests lead to a discussion on the applicability of these mortars in the re-sealing of joints. In many properties studied, we were able to determine that there was an improvement in their performance, due to the incorporation of the ceramic dust in the mortars. |
