ABSTRACT: It is ever more important to develop methods and strategies that foment the quality of education and fight school failure. Resorting to new information and communication technologies, namely the use of multimedia interactive boards, has contributed towards the elaboration of more diversified pedagogical materials. SMART Boards have brought about a breath of fresh air towards the improvement of the methods and strategies to be implemented in the classroom, promoting the use of multimedia elements during the elaboration of the teaching materials and providing for wider diversity of these materials and greater in class interactivity, allowing new forms of presentation of knowledge and a greater involvement between the intervening parties in the teaching and learning process. The present study was developed resorting to a case study methodology of a qualitative nature, involving four teachers and six classes two in the 7th Grade and two in the 9th, both in the regular education system, and two that belonging to this system, are considered equivalent to the 9th Grade: a class in the second year of the Education and Training Course for Installation Electricians and a class in the third year of the Alternative Curricula in the Area of Decorative Arts. As to the instruments of collection of data, the pupils answered two questionnaires and an interview to the teachers involved was carried out. The teachers also handed in their logbooks (one per class), in which they registered advantages and disadvantages of the use of the SMART Board in classroom contexts. At the end of the school year we observed, in each group, a lesson on the resolution of exercises/correction of the Global Test using the SMART Board. The present study allowed us to draw some conclusions, namely as to changes in the teaching practices in the pre-active, active and post-active dimensions of the teaching activity; the changes that occur in the dynamics of classes where the SMART Board is used, and the impact of the use of this technology in the learning and motivation of the pupils. Finally we present a set of reflections brought about by the study and suggestions for future research in the area are put forward.
