Medidas de acção contra o terrorismo : o caso do Reino Unido

Abstract

A presente dissertação debruça-se sobre o fenómeno do novo terrorismo e as suas incidências no respeito pelos direitos humanos no Reino Unido – caso de estudo. Deste modo, analisam-se algumas dimensões de âmbito político, bem como medidas legislativas e de que modo tal estratégia põe em causa ou não os princípios democráticos fundamentais de um dos regimes democráticos mais antigos do mundo. Além disso, estabelece-se a interligação e a comparação da estratégia britânica com outras – nomeadamente a dos Estados Unidos –, para fazer face às novas formas de acções terroristas. Para além deste escopo, o presente trabalho procura reflectir sobre a contextualização do desenvolvimento e evolução do novo terrorismo e os desafios que coloca às democracias existentes.

This dissertation will focus on the phenomenon of new terrorism and its impact on human rights in the UK – a case study. Thus, it attempts to analyze some measures within the political field as well the British legislative framework in order to assess the ways in which this strategy undermines or not the fundamental democratic principles of one of the oldest democracies in the world. Furthermore, this study establishes a connection and compares the strategy of the UK with other strategies – namely that of the United States - , which deal with these new forms of terrorist action. Additionally, it seeks to address the contextualization of the development and evolution of new terrorism and the challenges this may pose to current democracies.
