A utilização
The presented study focused on the analysis of the relation between alexithymia and facial recognition, considering the impact of avoidance behaviors typical from social anxiety. The use of avoidance behaviors reduces exposure and attention to relevant facial cues and seems to affect the performance of individuals with high social anxiety in face recognition tasks. To the extent that people with high levels of alexithymia also apply avoidance strategies in social interaction, it was hypothesized that facial recognition skills are also reduced among these subjects. To this end, fifty-five students from the University of Aveiro participated in the study, by responding to a battery of inventories and developing two computerized recognition tasks, one with faces and other with cars. The results reflect the negative effect of social anxiety in identifying and describing feelings, promoting alexithymia development. Despite contravening the central hypothesis of the study, subjects with higher levels of alexithymia showed lower response time on simple tasks of facial recognition. These data make way for future research in order to understand whether the advantage in response time of the subjects with alexithymia in the general population may be due to the unique feature or prevalent use of structural cues, which affect facial processing by an ambiguous effect between its dimensions, positive in identity and negative under expression. |
