Há morte nas catacumbas?: um estudo sobre turismo negro

Abstract

Na sociedade contemporânea, em que a morte é simultaneamente presente e ausente do quotidiano dos indivíduos, é importante identificar as principais instituições que permitem o contacto entre o indivíduo e a morte e as relações que podem ser estabelecidas entre eles. O Turismo Negro, ou seja, a actividade turística em locais de ou associados a morte e sofrimento, é uma das mais importantes instituições mediadoras da morte. O Turismo Negro é um objecto de interesse recente entre a comunidade académica. Não obstante, tem vindo a ser abordado por alguns autores, e é um tipo de turismo com variadas manifestações por todo o mundo. A presente dissertação consiste num estudo exploratório, de carácter qualitativo, sobre o modo como os visitantes de uma atracção de Turismo Negro a representam enquanto local ligado à morte. Pretendemos por este meio perceber se a morte é retirada da experiência turística dos sujeitos, tanto de uma atracção específica como de outras que possam ter visitado. Ao mesmo tempo, procurámos conhecer a atitude dos sujeitos em relação ao Turismo Negro e ao seu papel como mediador da morte na sociedade contemporânea.

In contemporary society, where death is simultaneously absent and present from our daily lives, it is important to identify both the main institutions that allow for the contact between individuals and death to take place, and the relationships that can be established between them. Dark Tourism, in other words, tourist activity in places of or associated with death and suffering, is one of the most important institutions that mediate death. Dark Tourism has only recently become an object of interest amongst academics. Nevertheless, there is some work produced on this matter, and Dark Tourism has many manifestations throughout the world. This dissertation consists of a qualitative exploratory study about the way visitors of a Dark Tourism attraction represent it as a place connected to death. Our aim was to understand if death is subtracted from the subjects’ tourist experience, both of a specific attraction and of others they may have visited. At the same time, we intended to know the subjects’ attitude towards Dark Tourism and its role as a mediator of death in contemporary society.
