This study intends to bring a contribution to the analysis and reflection on the business incubation process, in particular on the activities of the Incubadora de Empresas da Universidade de Aveiro. To achieve this goal, a methodology was designed in order to make possible to collect and interpret data from the incubator and incubated companies, including their perceptions on the services provided by the incubator. The study began with a review of the literature of the most relevant bibliographic sources on the subject. The empirical work included the collection of data on the incubation process through interviews and questionnaires with the direction of the incubator, and the incubated companies. This work was further complemented by the creation of a small focus group at the final stage of the research project, which sought to add a component oriented foresight to identify areas of development for the Incubator. The work has allowed to characterize the incubation process practiced by the IEUA, an exploratory evaluation of its results, and the identification of priority areas for improvement. Additionally it allowed the identification of a set of new services being considered by IEUA, such as the realization of benefits through partnerships; improvements in space and shared equipment; investing in training activities and recruitment coaching; and sharing of partners and contacts. Data analysis showed that incubators have high expectations towards the services provided by the Incubator; additionally it allowed to identify the Incubator’s areas for which the perceptions of the services provided have the most significant discrepancies. In particular, access to partnerships, protocols or other synergies from the IEUA environment, which relies largely on the University of Aveiro, has emerged as a priority area for improvement and development. Valuable information not only from the IEUA but also from the incubated companies allowed having an overview picture on the type of incubation, as well as identifying the IEUA weakest points in order to improve them. |
