Abstract: The results of an investigation of compositional relationships between the periclase, spinel and liquid phases in the systems MgO-(Al2O3-Cr2O3)-CS, MgO-(Al2O3-Fe2O3)-CS and MgO-(Cr2O3-Fe2O3)-CS are presented and combined with the results of two earlier investigations to establish compatibility relationships between the phases within the primary crystalIization volumes of periclase in these systems. Two methods of projecting phase compositions to obtain 2-dimensional representations of the compatibility relations between the phases are illustrated and the nature of the underlying chemical factors which determine them is indicated. It is shown that in all three systems, within the phase volumes periclase-spinel-liquid, retrograde solubility of the periclase is to be expected.
