In a contrasting perspective between Portuguese and Chinese-Mandarin, one of the topics that deserves attention is the multiple negation. It is a construction in which more than one negative element coexists in the same sentence. In the context of multiple negation, there are at least two different types: double negation, in which the negative elements cancel each other out, generating a positive reading; and negative agreement, in which the negative elements do not cancel each other out, but coexist and maintain the negative reading. In these respects, Portuguese and Chinese have similarities and differences. On the one hand, both Portuguese and Chinese have double negation; On the other hand, Portuguese has negative agreement, but the Chinese does not. Thus, it is pertinent to carry out a study on multiple negation in Portuguese and Chinese, in order to verify the grammatical structures that can be used to express double negation in both languages, as well as the structures of Chinese that are equivalent to negative agreement in Portuguese. In the context of teaching Portuguese as a foreign language to Chinese students, it is relevant to think about didactic guidelines that help Chinese students who are Portuguese learners to understand more simply the similarities and differences between Portuguese and Chinese with regard to multiple negation. |
