In the current environmental and economic context, this study aims to evaluate different management frequencies of vegetation in fuel strips adjacent to high and medium voltage power lines in mainland Portugal, in a case study in northern Portugal. The study was conducted in the parish of Vilar do Torno e Alentém, in the municipality of Lousada, where five models of periodic reduction of vegetation cover were implemented: monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, annually, and a control group (no management). The main objective of these interventions was to reduce species categorized as fast-growing and exotic, while favoring the coverage of slow-growing native species. The ultimate goal was to find an optimal management model that allowed for both reducing maintenance costs and mitigating the risk of wildfires, while preserving native biodiversity. |
