Definição e uso dos termos fábula e fabuloso em textos metalinguísticos no século XVIII

Abstract

Os textos metalinguísticos do século XVIII testemunham o uso das palavras fábula e fabuloso na língua portuguesa, em contextos que não se limitam à reflexão sobre os géneros literários. Nos textos que descrevem costumes, mitos, práticas religiosas e casos prodigiosos, a classificação do discurso como fabuloso pode transmitir julgamentos de valor motivados pela reacção à heterodoxia.

18th-century metalinguistic texts illustrate the usage of the words fable and fabulous in contexts not pertaining to the reflection on literary genres. In texts describing customs, myths, religious practice and wondrous events, classifying any discourse as fabulous could convey judgements of value justified by a reaction in opposition to heterodoxy.
