Energy literacy in Portugal

Abstract

This thesis is divided into 8 essays that aim to explore the concept of energy literacy, how it can be measured, which variables influence it, and which variables influence its dimensions. Essay 1 aims to gather and systematize the state of the art in the literature on energy literacy, trying to find out which definition of energy literacy is most used in the literature and which aspects should be considered when assessing its levels. This literature review allowed us to present a proposal for an energy literacy assessment that includes four dimensions: energy knowledge, financial knowledge, attitude, and behavior. Essay 2 seeks to measure the energy literacy levels of a sample of Portuguese university members and to verify whether there are significant differences in energy literacy levels by gender, age, background, living conditions, and responsibility for paying electricity bills. The results showed good levels of energy literacy, with significant differences only at the level of scientific background. Essay 3 tests the influence of the scientific subject of education on energy literacy levels and its dimensions. The results show that participants with a major in natural and environment sciences show better levels of energy literacy. Essay 4 determines the influence of financial knowledge on the other dimensions of energy literacy. The results show that financial knowledge positively and significantly influences energy knowledge. Essay 5 uses Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to create an aggregate energy literacy index and an index for each of the energy literacy components, which are then used in several regressions to understand its determinants. The results confirm the positive influence of energy price awareness on energy knowledge and behavior indexes. Essay 6 seeks to determine which factors influence energy literacy in different age groups and to study the relationship between knowledge, attitude, and behavior within the defined age groups. The results show that it is seniors who have better levels of energy literacy and highlight the role of financial knowledge and energy price awareness in determining energy knowledge and energy literacy levels. Essay 7 uses the heteroscedastic ordered probit model to determine who has better energy literacy levels: men or women. Although women have lower levels of energy knowledge, they demonstrate a more positive attitude and more appropriate energy behavior. Essay 8 uses the logit model to determine if there are common determinants among the variables: energy literacy, financial knowledge, and education level. The results show that energy knowledge is a common determinant, influencing all three variables. All essays also propose policy directions.

Esta tese é composta por 8 ensaios que, em conjunto, procuram explorar o conceito de literacia energética, como pode ser medido, quais as variáveis que o influenciam, e quais as variáveis que influenciam as suas dimensões. O ensaio 1 visa reunir e sistematizar a informação existente na literatura sobre literacia energética, tentando descobrir qual a definição de literacia energética mais utilizada na literatura e quais os aspetos que devem ser considerados na avaliação dos seus níveis. Esta revisão de literatura permitiu-nos apresentar uma proposta de avaliação da literacia energética que inclui quatro dimensões: conhecimento sobre a energia, conhecimento financeiro, atitude e comportamento. O ensaio 2 visa medir os níveis de literacia energética de uma amostra de membros universitários portugueses e verificar se existem diferenças significativas nos níveis de literacia energética por sexo, idade, formação, condições de vida e responsabilidade no pagamento das faturas de eletricidade. Os resultados mostraram bons níveis de literacia energética, com diferenças significativas registadas ao nível das diferentes áreas de estudo. O ensaio 3 testa a influência da área de estudos nos níveis de literacia energética e nas suas dimensões. Os resultados mostram que os participantes com formação em ciências naturais e do ambiente mostram melhores níveis de literacia energética. O ensaio 4 determina a influência do conhecimento financeiro sobre as outras dimensões da literacia energética. Os resultados mostram que o conhecimento financeiro influencia positiva e significativamente o conhecimento sobre a energia. O ensaio 5 utiliza a Análise de Componentes Principais (ACP) para criar um índice de literacia energética e um índice para cada um dos componentes de literacia energética, que são depois utilizados em várias regressões para entender que fatores os influenciam. Os resultados confirmam a influência positiva da consciência do preço da energia nos índices de conhecimento sobre a energia e comportamento. O ensaio 6 procura determinar quais os fatores que influenciam a literacia energética em diferentes faixas etárias e investigar a relação entre conhecimento, atitude e comportamento dentro das faixas etárias definidas. Os resultados mostram que são os idosos que têm melhores níveis de literacia energética e destacam o papel do conhecimento financeiro e da consciência do preço da energia na determinação dos níveis de conhecimento sobre energia e literacia energética. O ensaio 7 utiliza o modelo Probit Heteroscedastic Ordered para determinar quem tem melhores níveis de literacia energética: homens ou mulheres. Embora as mulheres tenham níveis mais baixos de conhecimento energético, demonstram uma atitude mais positiva e um comportamento mais adequado. O ensaio 8 utiliza o modelo Logit para determinar se existem determinantes comuns entre as variáveis: literacia energética, conhecimento financeiro e nível de educação. Os resultados mostram que o conhecimento sobre a energia é um determinante comum, influenciando as três variáveis. Todos os ensaios propõem direções políticas.
