Expansão turística em Pernambuco (BR): a persistência do empresariado local

Abstract

O objetivo deste estudo é analisar a evolução da atividade turística no Nordeste do Brasil, com ênfase na expansão da hotelaria nas décadas de 1980 a 2000. A área física da pesquisa contemplou a cidade do Recife e o litoral sul de Pernambuco, no então denominado Projeto Costa Dourada, depois Programa de Desenvolvimento do Turismo no Nordeste (PRODETUR/NE‑I). As informações foram coletadas através de fontes primárias e secundárias, e por meio de entrevistas. Dentre os resultados, destacam‑se os seguintes: em Pernambuco, a escolha incorreta da área ocasionou o insucesso do Projeto. Em contraposição, o setor hoteleiro da Praia de Porto de Galinhas teve um crescimento significativo. A persistência do esforço dos empresários, a divulgação turística e viabilização de voos charters permitiram transformar aquela praia em um destino internacional.

The aim of this study is to analyze the evolution of tourism in Northeast Brazil, with emphasis on expansion of hotels from 1980 to 2000. The physical area of research included Recife, the capital, and the southern coast of Pernambuco, Brazil, in what was then called Project Gold Coast after the Tourism Development Program in the Northeast (PRODETUR/ NE-I). Information was collected through primary and secondary sources and through interviews. Among the results, it is highlighted the following: in Pernambuco, the incorrect choice of the area caused the failure of the Project. In contrast, the hospitality industry from the beach of Porto de Galinhas has experienced significant growth. The dissemination and facilitation of tourist charter flights allowed to turn it into an international beach destination.
