A marcação a fogo
A caracterização
a marcação a laser.
Deste modo, a
rolhas microaglomeradas, marcada a fogo e a laser é apresentada nesta
The present dissertation, developed at Amorim Cork company, aims to study the fading phenomenon of fire branding in technical cork stoppers. The objectives defined for this thesis are the characterization of fire branded and laser branded micro-agglomerated stoppers surface; identification of the variables that contribute to the fading phenomena of micro-agglomerated stoppers; and characterization of stoppers that appeared during the internship period with the discoloration phenomenon, in order to identify its causes and eliminate/mitigate its incidence. Branding is the first finishing stage in the cork stopper production flow. There are 3 types of branding: ink, fire, and laser. The fire branding is processed by burning the cork surface with an incandescent stainless-steel stamp. However, sometimes this type of branding on technical corks fades, affecting the company's sales. To achieve the defined objectives, this internship was divided into 3 stages. Initially fire branding tests were conducted on a semi-industrial scale, at Amorim Cork, with the aim of determining what variables had influence on the incidence of the fading phenomenon. It was identified that the presence of alkaline residues in the rinsing stage of the washing process causes the fading of the fire brand. It was also found that the applied pressure and temperature, as well as the presence of dust during the stamping process, influences the quality and the aspect of the brand. In the second stage of the internship, the spectroscopic, topographic, and morphological characterization of fire-branded and laser-branded technical stoppers was carried out. The characterization techniques used were infrared spectroscopy, contact angle measurement, optical profilometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical stereomicroscopy. The purpose of the characterization was to grasp some fundamental knowledge about the mechanism of cork fire branding and to compare the two branding methods. It was found that the mechanism responsible for the thermal degradation that occurs in fire branding is different from the one associated with laser branding. In the third and last stage of this internship, the spectroscopic and morphological characterization of microagglomerated stoppers with the presence of alkaline chemical residues and fire branded stoppers at different temperatures and pressures was carried out. These characterization methods were also performed on microagglomerated stoppers with the fading phenomenon, originated from the Amorim Distribuição production process. The results of the characterization of these corks indicate that the temperature and pressure parameters were insufficient to degrade the surface of the cork and make the brand indelible. In the current literature it is not possible to find much detailed information about the effect of fire branding on the physical and chemical properties of cork. Thus, the spectroscopic, morphological and topographical characterization of the surface of fire and laser branded micro-agglomerated cork stoppers, is presented in this dissertation for the first time. The fire branding process and the parameters of the production flow that could influence the brand fading phenomenon were also studied in greater depth. These findings provide the opportunity for applying continuous improvement practices in washing and fire branding operations, which can have a positive impact on the production and sales of the cork stoppers industry. This work contributed towards the identification of the causes of the fading phenomenon of the fire branded microagglomerated cork stoppers, towards improving washing and fire branding operations, towards improving the visual and tactile appearance of the cork stopper and contributed with new knowledge and methodologies to the cork industry. |
