Drawing on two texts about essentialities of the feminine gender which are relative to a village in the north of Portugal and were published in 1938 and 1990 respectively, I propose: 1) A reflexion on “fala”, an attribute associated to singing, which defined women’s sexuality in Manhouce and also the spaces of interlocution provided by music; 2) the analysis of the path of the soloist Isabel Silvestre, who disseminated feminine musical competences- that in her village defined the subaltern position of women in relation to men – on stages and in the music market both of folklorization and pop/rock. I also discuss the reasons that might justify the persistence of ideas essentiality in what refers to the representations of women. |
