Identidades regionais: Acúrcio Correia da Silva e a Bairrada

Abstract

O presente trabalho aborda a problemática da identidade regional e, neste quadro, analisa a importância e as implicações ideológicas que o pensamento e a obra de Acúrcio Correia da Silva tiveram na promoção da região da Bairrada e da sua identidade. A dissertação desenvolve-se em seis capítulos: O primeiro incide sobre a questão da identidade regional. A génese deste conceito encontra-se nas manifestações de índole regionalista que aconteceram em Portugal no primeiro quartel do século XX. Estabelece-se, na segunda parte do capítulo, os pontos de convergência entre a identidade nacional e regional. A região da Bairrada ocupa o segundo capítulo. Aqui se atende à sua localização no quadro da divisão administrativa de Portugal, as teses quanto à origem do topónimo e a demarcação do seu espaço geográfico, à luz do critério vinícola, que é o principal pilar da sua identidade. Com base em alguns traços mais salientes, procura-se configurar a sua identidade. O terceiro capítulo introduz a biografia de Acúrcio Correia da Silva, enquadrando-a no contexto histórico: desde os últimos anos da Monarquia até à decadência da Primeira República. Na sequência do capítulo anterior, define-se o ideário dessa figura bairradina. Padre e intelectual, nele se salientam os valores da Tradição consagrados pela Monarquia orgânica. O quinto capítulo descreve a acção cultural do Padre Acúrcio no seio da Bairrada, com objectivos regionalistas e ideológicos indissociáveis da realidade sócio-política do País. À promoção de uma consciência artística bairradina subjaz uma componente pedagógica de índole social. O último capítulo elege um corpus de textos literários que plasmam a Bairrada. Através desses textos se procura fixar a sua identidade literária, apoiando eles, também, a reflexão sobre a existência ou não de uma literatura bairradina. Em síntese, o estudo sobre Acúrcio Correia da Silva e a Bairrada proporciona o conhecimento e a compreensão de factos históricos de índole regional que, na época em que se inscrevem, reflectem a face de um País à procura de si próprio.

The present work talks about the question of regional identity and, within this context, analyses the ideological implications, that the thought and work of Acúrcio Correia da Silva had in promoting the "Bairrada" Region and it's identity. The essay evolves in six chapters: The first aims at the question of regional identity. The genesis of this concept is found in the public demonstration of regionalist nature that took place in Portugal on the first quarter of the XX century. On the second part of the chapter, the convergence points between National and Regional identities are established. The Bairrada region fills the second chapter. Here it's localisation within the frame of Portugal's administrative division and the theses about the toponym's origin and geographic space demarcation is attended to, in light of wine-growing criterion, which is the most important pillar of it's identity. Based on some more prominent traces it's identity configuration is attempted at. The third chapter introduces the biography of Acúrcio Correia da Silva, fitting it into the historical context: from the last years of Monarchy until the decline of the first Republic. Following the previous chapter, the ideals of that "bairradina figure" is defined. A priest and an intellectual, the values of tradition rendered by organic Monarchy stand out on him. The fifth chapter describes the cultural action of priest Acúrcio within Bairrada, with regionalist and ideological objectives inseparable from the country's social and political reality. Upon the promotion of the "Bairradina" artistical conscience underlies a pedagogical component of social nature. The last chapter elects a set of literary texts that mould "Bairrada". The intention is to identify it's literary identity through those texts, using them as a base for reflection about the existence or not of a "Bairradina" literature. In conclusion, the study about Acúrcio Correia da Silva and Bairrada provides the knowledge and understanding of historical facts of regional nature that, at the time they are inscribed in, reflect the face of a country looking for itself.
