The definition of nZEB provided by EPBD is ambiguous and gives the European Member States full responsibility on its translation to their national conditions. The Passive House standard emerges as the ideal basis for the nZEB. Besides being compatible with renewable energies, it originates buildings which are affordable, highly efficient and have a high level of comfort. Although there have been several successful cases of the implementation of the Passive House standard worldwide, the best requirements for a building to comply with the standard in different climate regions are still being researched. As all the Members States have to comply with the EPBD and Central Europe has a cool climate, the biggest concern lies within the warmest climates. Thus the main purpose of this dissertation is to determinate the requirements that a building should have in order to comply with the Passive House standard in Southern Europe. A prototype building was created in order to be studied in different Southern European cities using DesignBuilder, a dynamic simulation software. This prototype building is a residential building with 90 m2 for a family of three. It has a simple geometry, being a single-story building with rectangular shape and flat roof. The prototype building had some parameters that were common to all locations and other ones that were adjustable so that it was possible to make the building comply with the Passive House standard in the different studied cities. For each location the U-values of the building envelope was chosen so that the heating load was circa 10 W/m2. By adjusting the variable parameters it was determined what requirements the prototype building should have in order to comply with the Passive House standard at the locations which were subject to study. The Passive House standard was achieved in all the studied cities. Southern Europe has bigger cooling demands than Central Europe, and those demands were satisfied only by using passive cooling techniques. In Southern European cities having a cool or mixed climate the behavior of the building was similar to what was found in Central Europe. In a general way, in warm climates the requirements could be relaxed in comparison to those found for Central Europe.
