This dissertation aims to assess whether Portuguese listed companies use deferred taxes in the following earnings management practices: avoid losses; avoid earnings declines; engage in a "big bath"; and earnings smoothing. The analysis is carried out with annual consolidated financial information, for a sample of non-financial entities in the General Portuguese Stock Index, and covers the period from 2005 to 2015. The methodology applied is based on Bauman et al. (2001). The results found suggest that Portuguese listed companies use deferred taxes to avoid "losses" and to avoid earnings declines. The evidence is also consistent with the use of deferred taxes to mitigate the difference between the current year’s earnings and the prior year’s earnings, suggesting that firms use deferred taxes to smooth earnings. The use of deferred taxes to engage in a "big bath" behaviour doesn’t seems to be usual in the firms analysed. |
