Daqui
The present study furthers M.A.K. Halliday’s insight that it is the interaction of the semantic components with one another that “shapes” the “personality” of the poetic text. Based on the assumption that the voice speaking in and through the text is both intrinsic to it and somehow identified by the author’s name, the object of this study is that of showing not only how Rank Scale Analysis operates, but also that it is indispensable in the process through which the poetic text is turned into discourse again, when the purpose is that of its critical comment or of its translation. After a critical presentation of Halliday’s wording theory and a reflection on the processes of production, reception and translation of the poetic text, Thomas Traherne’s discourse is analysed within this theoretical frame as a double speech interact: the one that produced the text and the one in which the text becomes living speech again in its reception. The singularity of the utterance is thus enhanced in its situational context, as well as the crucial role of the interpersonal dimension in the conjunct interaction of the semantic dimensions at every rank of the scale. The semiotic universe that comes to light from the merging of the poetic with the sacred discourse is thus envisaged within the triangular frame generated by the interpersonal relationships among the participants. Three stages are accordingly considered in Thomas Traherne’s writing corresponding to the gradual widening of the triad of interpersonal relationships. On this basis, a semantically oriented translation is carried out, involving a reassessment of the notion of fidelity to the wordings as fidelity to the interaction of the semantic dimensions in the wordings, always viewed within the text in its context. “Poetic translation” thus looms as the one in which, in and through the inseparable unity of what is said and the way in which it is said, “that which is to be said” (Derrida’s “avenir”, or “invention de l’ autre”) will be kept as such in the translated text (“le ‘à traduire’”) in the “endlessly opening into that pure space before us ” which is inherent to the very essence of poetry. |
