Bullying entre idosos institucionalizados: expressões num contexto

Abstract

Bullying refere-se a comportamentos agressivos intencionais e repetidos. Os principais intervenientes são agressores, vítimas e testemunhas. Este tema tem sido principalmente estudado em contexto escolar (envolvendo jovens) e em contextos de trabalho. Contudo, literatura recente aponta para que ocorra entre pessoas idosas institucionalizadas. Assim, este estudo qualitativo e exploratório tem como objetivo aprofundar o conhecimento sobre situações de bullying entre pessoas idosas a residir em ERPI. A metodologia adota a Técnica de Incidentes Críticos, aplicada por entrevistas semiestruturadas. A amostra inclui 15 elementos do staff de ERPI (6 técnicos e 9 auxiliares). Os principais resultados sugerem que os incidentes de bullying são muito frequentes, acontecendo diariamente, sobretudo em espaços comuns. As mulheres tendem a ser tanto agressoras como vítimas. As testemunhas são o staff da instituição, outros idosos e visitas. Ocorrem várias formas de bullying: verbal (mais comum), físico, social, desviar/mexer em pertences, combinação de diferentes tipos e escalada de comportamentos. Alguns elementos do contexto de ERPI parecem potenciar estes comportamentos, sobretudo a escassa privacidade, identidade e intimidade. As medidas de prevenção e ação devem centrar o contexto e os diversos intervenientes.

Bullying is applied to intentional and repeated aggressive behaviors. The aggressors, the victims and the witnesses are the main actors. This topic has primarily been studied in schools (involving young people) and in working contexts. However, recent literature points out that it can also take place among elderly institutionalized people. Therefore, the goal of this qualitative and exploratory study is to increase the knowledge about bullying cases on elderly living in nursing homes. The methodology used is the Critical Incidents Technique, applied by semi-structured interviews. The sample includes 15 nursing homes staff members (6 technicians and 9 assistants). The main results suggest that bullying incidents are very often, taking place on a daily basis, particularly in common spaces. Women tend to be both aggressors and victims. Witnesses are the institution’s staff, other elderlies and visitors. Many types of bullying occur: verbal (more common), physical, social, divert/moving belongings, combination of different types and a behavior escalate. Some elements of the nursing homes environment may enhance these behaviors, especially the lack of privacy, identity and intimacy. Prevention and action policies should focus the context and the different actors.
