The goal of this work is to identify the link between the stress felt by both pre-school and primary school teachers and the school organization as it was defined by the law number 115/98, as well as stress level among teachers. 180 teachers from Portugal’s north coast and from the Azores have been studied and later analysed by a Likert questionnaire (Stress and School Organization) and by an analogical scale (Evaluating Teachers’ Stress). Concerning the stress factors, the majority of the teachers specifically referred the constant changing of the laws, the lack of autonomy in many schools and the fact that, in most cases, educators are considered to be responsible for the bad school results of their pupils. Regarding stress in school organization, the huge number of school assemblies, the bad behaviour of learners, as well as the fact that in a single class there are different school levels, are considered to be the most influential causes for this type of nervous tension. Although there are now more school assemblies than in the past, it does not imply that primary and pre-school teachers share their experiences and ideas. In fact, they do not seem to share them at all. Teachers feel that school administration as it is nowadays is no more than a facsimile of other foreign models which do not fit within the Portuguese reality. Furthermore, educators are aware that they might loose their autonomy in the short run. The majority of teachers (93) fits within stress levels considered to be medium. 47 teachers suffer from high stress levels and only 40 go through a low stress experience. To fight back the problem of stress and anxiety, some strategies for the well-being of teachers are suggested, as well as a few useful guiding lines for those who are responsible for the education in Portugal. The aim is to make teaching a more satisfying and dignified career. |
