Abstract: This chapter summarizes some of the research done over the last years in the development of optical accelerometers, namely based on fiber Bragg gratings, enhancing the advantages of such technology relatively to the electronic one. The working principle of some fiber Bragg gratings sensors reported in literature is described. The implementation and experimental results of demonstrative applications of selected optical accelerometers will be presented, emphasizing Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) and Cardiovascular Monitoring (CM) applications.
