We find ourselves in a moment of crisis, one not only of a monetary or social degree, but also one of energy and environment. With the voracious consumption of our finite natural resources there comes an urgency to control it, exploring new ways to use what we have, but in a more efficient way without compromising our standard of life that we take for granted. In this context arises the energy efficiency of buildings as an emerging discipline capable of at least reduce the impact that buildings have on the environment in which we operate. From the myriad of techniques and methodologies comes free cooling, which will be studied in this thesis. Free cooling consists in an air conditioning technique that takes advantage of the outside air’s temperature, as well as the building’s design characteristics, to, when the outside air is cooler than on the inside, cool the building. With the objective of measuring the impact that technology has on a building, it was used a dynamic simulation tool, EnergyPlus through the interface of DesignBuilder. With it, we simulated several types of building, in different locations, to determine what would be the impact of these different variables on the final outputs, e.g., on the benefits of free cooling. Having determined as key variables, the climate, the building’s inertia, the type of use the building would have and the free cooling technique, it was quantified the expected trend to get better results in hotter locations and when the building has an annual occupation without major fluctuations, as well as the influence of the above mentioned variables on the potential for free cooling in the building. |
