ABSTRACT: The present thesis details and tries to hierarchize possible causes for the silting up problem of Ria de Aveiro, presenting some solutions to lessen it. The data concerns three study areas where the silting up is obvious and causes constraints. In the beginning a short historical geological summary of the area is presented in order to lead the document to a better understanding of the past and the origins of the study area. Next, are presented data and clues that allow pinpointing causes for the silting up. The understanding of what causes the silting up may lead to solutions for the three study areas. The solutions presented are based in studies that show that the shape of the canals of the Ria, and tide currents, are the main modelling agents of the deposited sediments. To lessen the problem, it is believed that the requalification, reconstruction and redimentioning of the soil walls of the saltpans, walls of the tanks of aquaculture and of the banks of the Ria main channels in allowing a better channel design will lead to an easier and natural self-cleaning of the area.
