During the year 2011, the defect refervido was the major cause of rejection during the final choice inspection operation of the earthenware pieces produced by Vista Alegre at Aradas factory. This defect is characterized by the appearance of bubbles in the glaze surface and/or local changes of the glass color, and presents a higher incidence level in the hottest and driest periods of the year. The objective of this study was to investigate of the origin of the defect refervido in products of earthenware, in order to define control procedures for raw materials, materials and processes that prevent its occurrence. For that, the raw materials used in the production of the earthenware products were characterized and the process variables which influence the occurrence of the defect, such as the storage time of the glazed pieces before firing and the time between the preparation and use of the glaze suspensions, were studied. The results showed that the defect refervido is favored by a non-uniform drying of the glazed pieces that leads to a local increase in the concentration of soluble salts that are dragged by the absorbed water during the drying process. Based on these results, several actions were implemented that led to a reduction of the incidence of the defect in the production of the Aradas factory in 77,4%. |
