Abstract: In this report we explore the implications of some challenging pattern problem solving tasks in the development of mathematical ability and creativity of students (future teachers). Solving challenging tasks usually requires creative thinking and our recent work in a project about patterns in the teaching and learning of mathematics showed that patterns can give a positive contribution to the development of mathematical ability and creativity for all students. So our main concern is to analyze, through some elementary classroom episodes, the contribution of pattern tasks to promote creative solutions by students.
