Comemorações em Aveiro no Estado Novo: 1940-1962

Abstract

O presente trabalho propõe-se divulgar as formas usadas pelo Estado Novo na propaganda dos seus princípios politico-ideológicos e na definição da identidade nacional e local, através da análise de manifestações comemoracionistas aveirenses. Partindo do estudo do contributo de Aveiro para as Comemorações Centenárias de 1940, tentámos provar o impacto ideológico da manifestação áurea da doutrina do regime na província, numa cidade arredada do programa celebrativo. Nas comemorações do Milenário de Aveiro, em 1959, e do Centenário da morte de José Estêvão, em 1962, demonstrámos que os estereótipos apregoados pelo regime perduraram e que a ingerência do poder político central foi uma constante quando a cidade, num movimento de oposição, quis afirmar os seus valores liberais e a sua aspiração democrática. O trabalho pretende dar uma nova abordagem aos centenários estadonovistas, deixando uma leitura que pode servir para a reflexão dos actos comemorativos presentes.

The present work intends to reveal the forms used by the Estado Novo in the propaganda of its political/ideological principles and in the definition of the national and local identity, through the analysis of the commemorative manifestations in Aveiro. Starting with the study of the contribution of Aveiro for the centenary commemorations of 1940, we try to prove the ideological impact of the main manifestation of the regime’s doctrine in the province, in a city left apart from the program of the celebrations. In the millenary commemoration of Aveiro, in 1959, and the centenary of the death of José Estevão, in 1962, we demonstrate that the stereotypes proclaimed by the regime remained and that the interference of the central political authority was a constant in a time that the city, in a movement of opposition, wanted to affirm its liberal values and its democratic aspirations. The work pretends to give a new approach to the centenaries of the Estado Novo and presents a vision that can help to understand the present commemorative acts.
