The main objective of this study was to evaluate the level of arsenic contamination in the Ria de Aveiro, through the determination of arsenic in sediments, suspended particulate matter (SPM) and water, and to evaluate the possible use of Scrobicularia plana (clam) as a biomonitor, through the clarification of its bioaccumulation pattern. Sediment, SPM, water and clam samples were collected from various locations in the area of the Largo do Laranjo, based on a preliminary analysis that showed an arsenic contamination gradient in the area. The clams were divided into five age groups with 1 cm intervals (C1 to C5), corresponding to yearly size classes. The determination of total arsenic in all samples was carried out by atomic fluorescence spectrometry with hydride generation (HG-AFS). The levels of arsenic present in sediments, SPM and water of the Ria de Aveiro presented a concentration gradient. In water, arsenic concentrations ranged from 0.5 μg/L in the less contaminated location and 5.3 μg/L in the most contaminated location. In sediments, concentrations reached as high as 90 mg/kg in the most contaminated place, while the highest arsenic concentrations where observed in SPM, reaching as high as 260 mg/kg in the same area. The concentrations of total arsenic in clams generally increased through the life cycle of the organism and the degree of contamination depended on the environmental contamination levels, especially the levels of arsenic in SPM. The linear regression between concentrations of arsenic in clams and SPM was found to be significant (R2=0.87; P=0.05), contrary to sediments and the dissolved phase, suggesting that this should be the main route of arsenic entry in the body of the bivalve. Bioaccumulation rates were higher in the most contaminated sites, with values greater than 5.5 mg/kg year in sites A1 and A3 and in order of 3.5 mg/kg year on site A2. At the reference site (A14), the rate of bioaccumulation was lower than 1 mg/kg year. The bioconcentration factors calculated between the arsenic contamination in clams and the different environmental compartments showed that the ratio between the concentration of arsenic in clams and in the surrounding medium is higher in the less contaminated sites, suggesting this bivalve not to be the ideal biomonitor to evaluate the As contamination in the Ria de Aveiro.
