A rabeca chuleira, etnografias, contextos e tocadores

Abstract

Esta investigação propõe-se a estudar a rabeca chuleira, um cordofone popular português que perdeu protagonismo, ao longo do século XX. Começo por explorar a bibliografia produzida sobre esse instrumento musical, assim como sobre a chula, um género performativo em que a rabeca desempenhava um papel central. Ao longo da dissertação são descritas algumas geografias da rabeca, contextos de chula, papel dos rabequistas nas performances, aspectos da morfologia, técnica, aprendizagem do instrumento e tocadores. Recorri ao trabalho de campo como principal metodologia, para responder a questões sobre a rabeca chuleira e para aprender a tocá-la com um detentor da tradição. Este trabalho centra-se, por isso, na história de vida do último tocador de rabeca chuleira, que tocou com diferentes gerações de tocadores de chula, em contexto espontâneo e em contextos da folclorização.

This research proposes to study the rabeca chuleira, a popular Portuguese stringed instruments that has lost prominence over the twentieth century. I begin by exploring the bibliography on this musical instrument, as well as the chula, a performative genre in which the rabeca has a central role. Along the dissertation we describe some of the rabeca geographies, chula contexts, the role of rabequistas in the performances, aspects of morphology, technique, learning the instrument and players. I resorted to fieldwork as the main methodology to answer questions about the rabeca chuleira and learn to play it with a tradition keeper. This work focuses therefore on the life story of the last rabeca chuleira player, who played with different generations of chula players in the context of spontaneous and folklorization.
