This paper is a reflexion proposal on the role of sound archives in Rio de Janeiro in the twentieth century, through the analysis of a phonographic archive of the Laboratory of Ethnomusicology of UFRJ and more specifically its “Collection of Popular Music Recorded in the Second Decade of the Twenty Century”. From a theoretical approach that combines the contributions of anthropology and ethnomusicology discussing their policies and storage conditions offered to the sound archives, I also analyse the collection through the testimony of the people responsible for the archive development. To Professor Dulce Lamas will be given a special attention due to her role in the initial investigation and cataloguing of the collection. Therefore I will use her texts, her cataloguing index cards and the catalogue published in 1997 to help us better understand the construction and historical importance of the collection to the archive, to the University and to Rio de Janeiro. Lastly I will discuss the performance of a contemporary group as a possibility for re-signifying the historical sound sources material. |
