ABSTRACT: In 2002, a quantitative survey based on 107 faunal and sedimentary samples provided additional benthic and sedimentological data for the assessment of biossedimentary gradients in the lagoon of Obidos, a shallow system located on the central western coast of Portugal. Sediment grain size distribution showed that ≈60% of the sediment were muds, restricted to the central and inner zones of the lagoon, while coarse and medium sand sediments dominated the outer unstable marine-influenced areas. Macrobenthic samples provided 52397 individuals, distributed among 219 taxa, characteristic from Atlantic and Mediterranean lagoons. The univariate analysis showed that species richness was higher in the sampling stations near the entrance of the lagoon, which were more sheltered and there is an important marine influence; and in the central part of the lagoon, where there is a developed characteristic lagoon assemblage. Nevertheless, faunal abundance and biomass were higher in the inner muddy margins of the lagoon. Four species occurred at more than 50% of the sampling stations (Heteromastus filiformis, Corophium acherusicum, Hydrobia cf ulvae and Tubificoides benedeni), and account for 55% of the total abundance. However, more than 88% of the total abundance is due to a small number of species (24, ≈10% of the total), possibly due to the maturity of the lagoonal community. Detritivores and carnivores present, respectively, 60% and 2% of the total abundance, at both surveys (1984 and 2002). But concerning filter feeding species, there is a decrease from 32% in 1984 to 18% in 2002. In the other hand, herbivores increase their contribution to the total abundance, presenting 20% in 2002, instead of the 6% observed in 1984. In 2002, cluster analysis identified seven distinct faunal groups. These groups are reinforced by ordination analysis, which unveil a longitudinal spatial sequence. The groups are positioned in 4 main areas: marine, central part of the lagoon, margin of the lagoon, continental part of the lagoon. To evaluate the environmental quality of the lagoon three different indices were used: H’, W and AMBI. For the Óbidos lagoon, the present work shows that H’ and W are not adequate, at least in the scales proposed by the authors, as they underestimate environmental quality. AMBI shows up as the most effective, as it reveals a higher concordance with the identified sedimentary and biological gradients. The macrobenthic communities and the sediment analysis provided by the present work present different patterns from the data from 1984. The differences are probably due to several hydrological changes that took place since 1984, reflecting the sensitivity of coastal lagoons, vastly reported in the literature The present work aims to characterise the lagoon of Óbidos, particularly emphasizing its current status and its evolution.por
