A edição em Portugal (1970 - 2010): percursos e perspectivas

Abstract

A turbulência que se vive no domínio editorial, a nível planetário, por via da passagem ao paradigma digital, tem contornos muito particulares no sector editorial e livreiro em Portugal. Neste contexto, a presente dissertação visa aprofundar e apresentar de forma sistematizada e criteriosamente sustentada os aspectos institucionais, culturais e operacionais que caracterizam a edição portuguesa dos anos 70 à viragem do milénio e que a posicionam na transição para o digital. O estudo apresentado contempla, com especial atenção: (i) a importância fulcral dos editores independentes para o desenvolvimento da actividade editorial das imediações do 25 de Abril até aos dias de hoje; (ii) o impacte qualitativo e quantitativo que a liberdade democrática aportou para o fomento dos hábitos de leitura e a difusão do livro; (iii) as profundas alterações vividas no mercado do livro, em consequência da concentração livreira, iniciada em 1985, e da concentração editorial, verificada entre 2007 e 2010; (iv) os inconvenientes da conflitualidade histórica no seio da edição, com especial enfoque na cisão no movimento associativo de editores e livreiros, ocorrida em 1999, e na posterior reunificação, viabilizada em 2009; e (v) as ocorrências que são possíveis reconhecer e/ou perspectivar na edição digital, partindo de uma difusa – embora intensa – realidade internacional para os primeiros passos a nível nacional.

The ongoing turbulence in the editorial scene at the planetary level caused by the transition to the digital paradigm, has a very specific character in the publishing and bookselling sectors in Portugal. In this context, this thesis aims to deepen and to present on systematic and thoroughly sustained criteria the institutional, cultural and operational aspects that characterized the Portuguese edition from the 70’s to the turn of the Millennium, and that marked its transition to the digital era. The presented study focused primarily on: (i) the central importance of independent publishers for the development of the editorial activity from about the revolution of 25th April 1974 until the present; (ii) the qualitative and quantitative impact that the democratic freedom brought to the development of reading habits and book promotion; (iii) the deep changes occurring in the book market, as a consequence of the concentration of booksellers, starting in 1985, and the concentration of publishers, occurring between 2007 and 2010; (iv) the disadvantages of the historical conflict within the edition players, with special attention to the division within the publishers and booksellers associative movement, occurring in 1999, and the posterior reunification, made possible in 2009; and (v) the facts that are possible to recognise or forecast in the digital edition, starting from a diffuse but intense international reality, towards the first steps at the national level.
