Ser velho em As visitas do Dr. Valdez, de João Paulo Borges Coelho

Abstract

Este trabalho propõe-se, a partir do romance As visitas do Dr.Valdez, de João Paulo Borges Coelho, destacar a temática da velhice. O romance aborda Moçambique em mudança, a História que se entrelaça na história. As transformações físicas e psicológicas decorrentes da passagem do tempo obrigam a novos olhares que permitem a simbiose entre o novo e o velho, o antigo e o moderno. Observa-se, neste romance, um cruzar de corpos: o corpo das personagens, concebido como uma porção de espaço, com as suas fronteiras, os seus centros vitais, as suas defesas e as suas fraquezas; o corpo da narrativa e o corpo de um país jovem que nasce. Nasce também o romance e alimenta-se das memórias e das lembranças do passado, das múltiplas evocações de momentos e de diferentes ambientes.

Based on the novel The visits of Dr. Valdez, by João Paulo Borges Coelho, this paper sets out to highlight the theme of old age. The novel deals with a changing Mozambique, History intertwining in history. The physical and psychological changes resulting from the passage of time require new insights that allow the symbiosis between old and new, ancient and modern.There is, in this novel, an intersection of bodies: the characters’ body, conceived as a portion of space, with its borders, its vital centers, defenses and weaknesses, the narrative’s body and the body of a young newborn country. Also born is the novel, feeding on the memories and the recollections of the past, the multiple evocations of moments and of different atmospheres.
