In Portugal, the forest occupies nearly 38% of its territory and plays an important economical, social and environmental role. However, the economic and social changes of the last decades contributed to stopping the use of shrub and fuel wood leading to its accumulation in the forest. This accumulation of biomass in the forest shrub layer leads to the rise of forestry fires. Also, the forest cleaning operations must bear in mind the impact on the forest soil. The main goal of the research work presented in this dissertation is the study of the aging of biomass in the forest natural conditions, which is subjected to the leaching by the rain, to the biodegradation due to the fact that it is in contact with the forest soil and also to air drying. The effects of these processes were studied based on the biomass sampling of bushes from the shrub layer to measure the content of humidity, ash, volatile matter, fixed carbon, total and soluble elements, and lastly the heating value though the use of a dry bomb calorimeter. The procedure includes cutting specimens of gorse, heath, bramble, rockrose, pine and acacia, with or without wood chipping, and the storage of biomass in a nearby place. The sampling of each species included in the piles took place in November, January and April, and the specimens were subdivided into green and brown fractions, milled and preserved for further laboratory analysis. The results revealed that upon the aging process of the biomass placed in piles in the forest, the ash content from complete specimens was reduced to less than 3% (dry basis), while it rose in the piles of shipped biomass due to the biodegradation and mixing with soil. The lower heating value (LHV) of global biomass decreased with time, so that it reached the range between 17 and 19.5 MJ/Kg (dry basis). There was an similar evolution in the shipped biomass piles, but the heating value was lower because of a faster biodegradation process. The rainfall influenced strongly the humidity content of biomass since November till mid February, which leaded to the decrease of LHV of that material. The analysis of soluble and total elements in the biomass showed that chloride and potassium are the elements that are easily removed by leaching which contributes for a higher quality of biofuel. These results point out to the potential of shrub biomass use in the production of energy without causing greenhouse gas emission and show the importance of biomass aging in the decrease of environmental impacts associated with cutting and removing the shrub from the forest.
