Manuais de teste de fármacos: tradução e análise linguística

Abstract

O texto de partida que esteve na base do desenvolvimento deste projecto foi o Manual Accompanying The GPHF - Minilab®, Volume II, Thin Layer Chromatographic Tests, editado pela Global Pharma Health Fund (GPHF), uma instituição de beneficência iniciada e patrocinada pela Merck Darmstadt – Alemanha. O projecto insere-se no Mestrado de Tradução Especializada, no âmbito específico da Saúde e Ciências da Vida. Estamos na presença de um manual que contém os procedimentos a efectuar para testar a qualidade de vários fármacos através de Cromatografia em Camada Fina, usando, para tal, o material constante do Minilab. Destina-se a ser usado, sobretudo, em países de África, em que a disseminação de medicamentos falsificados assume proporções escandalosas. Devido ao desconhecimento do grau de formação dos utilizadores do texto, possivelmente voluntários, tornou-se imperioso que se procurasse torná-lo o mais claro possível, utilizando-se, sempre que necessário, estratégias de desambiguação aquando da sua translação para a língua de chegada, o português. Este relatório visa explanar a metodologia que norteou todo o processo de tratamento e tradução do texto e apresentar uma reflexão acerca dos problemas e situações tradutológicas que foram surgindo ao longo desse processo, fundamentando a sua resolução e expondo exemplos práticos. Estas questões tradutológicas centraram-se nos aspectos linguísticos e, concretamente, nas alterações ao nível da estrutura frásica que se consideraram pertinentes para a transmissão eficaz da mensagem. As opções tomadas são apresentadas segundo razões de cariz pragmático, estilístico e sintáctico.

The source text on which this translation project was developed was the Manual Accompanying The GPHF - Minilab®, Volume II, Thin Layer Chromatographic Tests, edited by The Global Pharma Health Fund (GPHF), a charitable institution initiated and maintained by Merck Darmstadt – Germany. This project is a requirement for the Masters in Specialized Translation in the specific field of Health and Life Sciences. We are in the presence of a user manual that contains the procedures to be observed when testing the quality of several drugs through Thin Layer Chromatography testing, using the contents of the Minilab. It is meant to be used mostly in African countries, where the proliferation of counterfeit medicines is reaching scandalous proportions. Due to the fact that the level of formal education of its users, who are probably volunteers, is unknown to us, it became an imperative to make an effort to render the text as clear as possible. With that purpose in mind, disambiguation strategies were used whenever it was considered appropriate during the process of translating the text into the target language – Portuguese. The present report aims at expounding the methodology that guided the entire process of treatment and translation of the text and presenting a reflection on the translatorial problems and special situations that arose along the process. Their resolution is supported by theoretical research and illustrated with examples taken from the source and target texts. These translatorial problems are centered on the linguistic aspects and, more exactly, on the changes occurring at the level of the sentence structure that were considered of substantial importance for the efficient conveyance of the message. The options that were taken are presented according to three types of reasons: pragmatic, stylistic and syntactic.
