A vegetação
Forest biomass has a huge potential when used as a solid biofuel and may have an important contribution in actual energetic demand as a renewable resource. The shrub vegetation that grows in Portuguese forest increases the risk of fire is an attractive resource that may be use for energy production. The arbustive species like gorse (Ulex) have a high biomass density in littoral-central Portugal, they may be used as a combustible and at the same time the fire risk is reduced. The aim of the present work is the analysis of the influence of leaching the biomass in order to remove the inorganic nutrients, and so recognizing which of them are easily removed by water. For this purpose, part of the biomass was left in the forest leaching by the rain while the other part was kept covered. The drying of biomass, leached and not leached, was analyzed; burning the biomass on a stove allowed the study of the effect of the leaching on the gaseous emissions of ammonia and chloride and also on the characteristics of the ash derived from the combustion. Monitorization of the drying process revealed that the final humidity loss is similar in both cases. From the analysis made to the biomass, it was verified that it is possible to remove a considerable amount of elements like potassium, chloride and sodium by leaching. This fact allows recycling nutrients directly to the soil and better characteristics of biomass to be used as a fuel. Combustion experiments stowed the conclusion that the leaching and drying process in the forest reduces ammonia and chloride emissions. Ashes from the stove analysis proved that elements like potassium and sodium are highly removed by leaching, while calcium, magnesium, iron and manganesium have higher contents in biomass subjected to this treatment. This increase might be due to the biological degradation of the biomass during the leaching in the forest. |
