Impacto da poluição atmosférica na saúde da população residente em Lisboa

Abstract

Vários estudos têm demonstrado a relação entre a poluição atmosférica e a saúde. Apesar desta evidência, em Portugal a investigação epidemiológica relacionada com a qualidade do ar é praticamente inexistente. A presente investigação tem como área de estudo a cidade de Lisboa. As séries temporais são constituídas pelo número de admissões hospitalares diárias e parâmetros ambientais do período 1999-2004. Os dados de poluição atmosférica, obtidos da base de dados da rede de monitorização do Instituto do Ambiente, constam de dados diários de PM10, PM2.5, SO2, NO, NO2, CO, e O3 em três estações de Lisboa. As séries temporais incorporaram ainda a médias diárias de temperatura e humidade. Foram recolhidos dados de admissões aos serviços de urgência em 12 instituições hospitalares, em que as doenças contabilizadas dizem respeito à 9ª revisão da classificação internacional de doenças (ICD-9 460-519), separadas pela idade dos utentes (<15, 15-64, >65 anos). O objectivo é investigar: (i) se as concentrações de poluentes atmosféricos, temperatura e humidade afectam a saúde humana, nomeadamente no que respeita a problemas respiratórios e circulatórios; (ii) a influência da idade da população naquelas admissões hospitalares; (iii) o estudo de causa/efeito imediato e retardado. Os tratamentos estatísticos basearam-se na correlação entre as doenças e os poluentes, temperatura e humidade para cada faixa etária e para o conjunto das faixas etárias e significância estatística dessa correlação. Associações estatisticamente significantes (p <0,05) foram encontradas entre admissões hospitalares e temperatura, humidade, PM10, e todos os poluentes gasosos excepto NO e CO. O teste t de Student e o teste F foram também aplicados e as suas conclusões foram idênticas.

ABSTRACT: Several studies have demonstrated the relation between atmospheric pollution and health. In spite of this evidence, in Portugal the epidemiological investigation associated with the air quality is practically non-existent. The present research has as study area the city of Lisbon. Time series are constituted by number of daily hospital admissions and environmental parameters for the period 1999-2004. Atmospheric pollution data were obtained from the database of the air quality monitoring network of the Environmental Institute, consisting of daily levels of PM10, PM2.5, SO2, NO, NO2, CO and O3 for three stations in Lisbon. The time series also incorporated the daily averages of temperature and humidity. Daily data on number of emergency admissions due to respiratory and circulatory diseases were collected in 12 hospital institutions, according to the ninth revision of the international classification of diseases (ICD- 9 460-519), separated by users age (<15, 15-64, >65 years old). The aim is to investigate: (i) if the concentrations of air pollutants, temperature and humidity affect human health, namely on hospital admissions due to respiratory and circulatory diseases in Lisbon; (ii) the influence of age of the population in those hospital admissions; (iii) the immediate and lagged study of cause/effect. The statistical treatments were based on the correlation between the diseases and the pollutants, temperature and humidity for each age group and for the set of the age groups and statistical signification of this correlation. Statistically significant correlations (p <0,05) between hospital daily admissions and temperature, humidity, PM10, and all the gaseous pollutants, except for NO and CO, were obtained. The Student t-test and F-test were also applied and its conclusions were identical.
