Research in science education has been pointing to the need of considering new approaches to teaching and learning, particularly at university level. Many researchers consider that there are important skills and capacities that must be developed by the university students, beyond academic contents. Among these we should highlight the following: questioning and communication competencies, group work, problem solving and ICT abilities and openness for life long learning. All these skills and capacities imply a much more active learning, in opposition to the traditional processes. This work has a starting point on the idea that it is possible to promote active learning in Chemistry, through the incentive to questioning during the didactic interaction between teachers and students. It also reflects the emphasis being placed by an increasing number of educators on the importance of quality questions in the learning and teaching processes, as well as on the need to stimulate these questions positively. This means that students’ questions were a central issue in this research. Several instruments and various strategies were developed in order to stimulate students’ questions, aiming at increasing their involvement in Chemistry learning. The incentive for using ICT platforms were one of the instruments used for facilitating the interaction between students and teacher. One aim of this study was to identify the relationships between students’ questions and their learning. A second goal was to understand the nature of undergraduate students’ difficulties in learning Chemistry, through their questions. Specific strategies and instruments, in which questions played a central role, were developed in order to promote active learning. A set of indicators that could favour an active learning environment were considered and tested. The empirical research work was developed in three phases. The first one was a pilot study which lasted for two semesters and occurred during the academic year 2000/2001. The second study (2001/2002) was developed during one semester and the third one (2002/2003) during two semesters. The last study included an in-depth analysis, aiming at trying to understand the main students’ difficulties about thermochemistry concepts. A group of 3 students was followed, during the last semester, while developing mini-projects. A qualitative research methodology of the naturalist-ethnographic type was used, under the perspective of Grounded Theory. The data was collected through direct classroom observation, participant observation, semi-structured interviews and questionnaires including problem-situations, registers of students’ access to the computer and students’ questions and explanations. Audio and/or video recordings were also used in diverse contexts of data collection. Students’ written questions, from diverse contexts, were analyzed by their semantic meaning and cognitive quality, against previously defined quality indicators. The questions induced by the reading of a small scientific text, as well as the specific explanations given by students to the problem-situations were also analysed. The results pointed to a great involvement of the majority of undergraduate students attending Chemistry classes. Although the number of questions has decreased throughout the academic year, during the 3 phases, their quality has increased. It was also found that the questions have a better potential as compared to the explanations, for the identification of students’ difficulties. Furthermore, it became evident to us that the instruments used to stimulate questions without articulation with the strategies that support them, do not have the expected and wished effect on students’ involvement. A model with indicators of an active learning environment is proposed, where the incentive to students’ questions plays a central role, integrating the diverse instruments and strategies used in this study. This model is based on the results of this research, after comparing them with other active and inquiry learning models, where the questions also play a relevant role. Finally, some limitations and suggestions for further research studies are also presented.pt
