Juventude e velhice na narrativa de Branquinho da Fonseca

Abstract

A actividade criativa de Branquinho da Fonseca não se limitou ao âmbito literário; dedicou também a sua vida aos livros e à difusão da cultura portuguesa, merecendo um lugar de destaque entre os modernistas do século XX. Com este estudo pretendemos apresentar três fases existenciais retratadas nas narrativas do escritor: a infância, a juventude e a velhice. Os três capítulos principais centram-se, precisamente, no desenvolvimento de cada um destes três estádios, identificando as suas mais emblemáticas personagens, bem como as correspondentes representações. Verifica-se que existe uma estreita relação entre as três fases estudadas, de analogia e continuidade, sendo a juventude a mais marcante e aquela para onde as restantes confluem. As crianças/adolescentes caminham avidamente em direcção à juventude e os velhos têm o passado como horizonte, recordando vivências juvenis. Contudo, existe também uma boa dose de especificidade entre as personagens, em cada estádio. Os livros de contos e as narrativas de maior fôlego revelam um mundo estranho, misterioso e sugestivo, no qual o lirismo, o realismo e o grotesco sobressaem. São histórias em que as personagens adquirem uma importância capital, por vezes revelando marcadamente, até, pormenores da vida do autor, seus sentimentos ou críticas.

The creative activity of Branquinho da Fonseca didn´t confine itself to literary space; he also dedicated his life to books and to the Portuguese culture spreading. These are good reasons for considering him one of the outstanding modernists of the XX century. With this study we aim to present three life periods portrayed in the writer’s narratives: childhood/teenaged, youth and old age. The main three chapters focus precisely in the development of each one of these three periods, identifying its most representative characters as well as corresponding features. There’s a strict connection among the three stages, one of similarity and linkage, being youth characters the most remarkable and overwhelming of all. Teenagers walk avidly towards youth and the elder characters have the past as horizon, remembering youthful experiences. Nevertheless, there’s also a big deal of specificity among the characters, within each life period. The short stories’ books and the other longer narratives disclose an odd, mysterious and suggestive world where lyricism, realism and grotesque emerge. They are stories in which the characters play a significant role, sometimes even clearly revealing the author’s inner life details, feelings and criticisms.
