A metodologia experimental envolveu quatro etapas: recolha e caracterização
This work has the purpose of testing several wastes generated from paper-pulp production (primary and biological sludges, dregs and grits) in order to check the possibility of their incorporation into the production of lightweight expanded clay aggregates. The experimental methodology involved the characterization of these wastes; incorporation of the wastes in the production of lightweight aggregates, industrial tests and final characterization of the obtained products. The developed formulations involved variable quantities of primary sludge (5- 30%), biological sludge (5-40%) and mixtures of these sludges with 5% of dregs. The grits were used only to cover the tested aggregates. In the lab tests aggregates were obtained with spherical form, porous internal structure and a good grain size distribution. The best amounts of sludge to incorporate in the clay matrix were 10 and 20% of primary sludge and up to 30% of incorporation in the case of biological sludge. Leaching tests weren’t significant, showing that this process results in a inertization of the wastes. In the industrial tests, the incorporation of biological sludge was successful as a raw material up to a percentage of 10%. The characteristics of the process and the product were kept unchanged. However, the high water content of the wastes requires a strict initial control of the burn operation. Monitoring of the exhaust gases realized at the rotary kiln chimney in the industrial plant show that no dramatic changes occurred due to the presence of biological sludge. Some parameters even show a decreasing tendency. This work allowed the effective implementation of the production of lightweight expanded clay aggregates with the incorporation of cellulose wastes and can therefore become a interesting environmental solution, for the non-utilization of landfills and reduction of use of natural resources and moreover offer economical benefit, due to the reduction of global costs with raw materials, transportation costs and landfill. An additional advantage of this incorporation is that this method ensures the inertization of potentially toxic elements since they react with the clay matrix at high temperatures. |
