seis estados de maturação: (0) repouso sexual, (I) gametogénese inicial, (II)
gametogénese avançada, (III) maturação, (IV) postura, (V) pós-postura. A
The Ria de Aveiro, an estuarine lagoon located in the portuguese north-west coast, is an important area of commercial exploitation of bivalves. The grooved razor shell (Solen marginatus) and the pullet carpet shell (Venerupis pullastra) are, from an economical point of view, among the most important species in the lagoon. However, the overfishing of these populations, both by professional and illegal fishermen, has leaded to an apparent exhaustion of the stocks. Thus, there is an urgent need for the implementation of management and conservation measures. In this context, it was studied some biological data of the mentioned species in order to established scientific basis for management proposals. The growth and the reproductive cycle of the grooved razor shell and the pullet carpet shell were studied at Ria de Aveiro in 2002 and 2003. Shell growth and age determination of the grooved razor shell and the pullet carpet shell were investigated using both surface growth rings and internal shell microgrowth patterns (by the acetate peel method). Only the acetate peel method showed good results for both species. The estimated von Bertalanffy growth curves were the following: grooved razor shell (Solen marginatus) Lt = 139,9 [1- e -0,30 (t+0,03)] pullet carpet shell (Venerupis pullastra) Lt = 54,3 [1- e -0,29 (t+0,30)] The reproductive cycle of the grooved razor shell and the pullet carpet shell was classified, after processing the specimens through classic histological methods, in six stages of maturation: (0) sexual rest, (I) start of gametogenesis, (II) advanced gametogenesis, (III) mature, (IV) spawn, (V) post-spawn. The analysis of the reproductive cycle of Solen marginatus in 2002 showed a spawning period between May and September, whereas in 2003 the spawning period was shorter, occurring between May and July. Venerupis pullastra showed a longer spawning period, March to November. The maturity ogives for the studied species allowed us to estimate the length at first maturity. The grooved razor shell reach first maturity at a total length of 47,7 mm and the pullet carpet shell at a total length of 22,0 mm. |
