Several studies have presented the benefits of wine tourism for the wineries and the surrounding communities, as well as the industry as a whole. In this view, wine routes can be seen as privileged instruments of organisation as well as diffusion of wine tourism, whilst contributing to diversify regional economies, and increasing the reputation and image of wine regions and regional wines. Wine tourism in Portugal is in its infancy; nevertheless recent years saw significant developments. To date several wine routes have been created in Portugal, each one with its unique structure. Despite such development, research has been scant, particularly in evaluating their performance. This study uses the Bairrada Wine Route as a case study and attempts to make the first evaluation of the route. In doing that, this study gathered data from managers about their initial objectives when joint the route; the problems and constraints that have faced since then; the level of satisfaction with the route, the investments made and jobs created; views on the actual management model; advantages for their business; views on current signalling; partnerships and collaborations developed; and levels of demand. The study also gathered information about the future perspectives on the route. This study was made of two-stages. During the first stage (preliminary stage) exploratory interviews were made and meetings attended in order to get familiar with the thematic. During the second-stage (main stage) interviews were conducted as well as unstructured observations to the wineries. The interviews were done with those in charge (managers) of the wineries. The data collected permitted to draw the first picture (evaluation) of the Bairrada Wine Route. It is visible that the Bairrada Wine Route has scope for development, but it is necessary more engagement and participation of the adherents in the existing and/or future structure of the Bairrada Wine Route. |
